The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance has been established by the European Commission to support the development of a clean and globally competitive hydrogen industry in Europe. The European Clean Hydrogen Alliance aims at an ambitious deployment of hydrogen technologies by 2030, bringing together renewable and low-carbon hydrogen production, demand in industry, mobility and other sectors, and hydrogen transmission and distribution. With the Alliance, the EU wants to build its global leadership in this domain, to support the EU’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Alliance brings together industry, national and local public authorities, civil society and other stakeholders and is strongly anchored in the hydrogen value chain, covering renewable and low-carbon hydrogen from production via transmission to mobility, industry, energy, and heating applications.
UPEI and its members are committed to the European Union’s ambition of reaching a climate-neutral economy by 2050, and will seek to contribute to achieving this target through the supply of carbon-neutral fuels. How this contribution may materialise has been further developed in UPEI 2050 Vision.
In particular, UPEI members are currently involved in clean hydrogen as they build and operate retail stations across Europe where users can refuel hydrogen powered vehicles and as they repurpose their existing supply and distribution infrastructure to adapt to the growing demand for low carbon fuels, including hydrogen. Moreover, since they are the interface between energy producers and consumers, they communicate the energy transition to drivers and raise awareness on alternative fuels, including hydrogen.
By joining the Alliance, we will to contribute by:
- Bringing our expertise with the supply, storage, distribution (wholesale and retail) of hydrogen and other energies for road transport;
- Highlighting the implications of repurposing the existing fuel/energy supply and distribution infrastructure to accommodate hydrogen and derived synthetic fuels;
- Discussing the opportunities for hydrogen and derived synthetic fuels in off-grid areas;
- Bringing the perspective of SMEs and independent companies acting in the supply chain.
